- Bellwork: Read the Poetry and figurative language article and answer the figurative language questions.
- Mini-Lesson: Review stanzas 1 and 2 in "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley.
- Active Engagement: With their partner, students will discuss what they think stanza two is saying how it is presenting the theme of "the courage to persevere.
- Work time: Students will independently annotate "Invictus" stanzas 3-4.
- Mini-lesson: comparing and contrasting Invictus with Bearing Up filling out the compare and contrast chart
- Students will fill out the compare and contrast chart.
- Exit ticket: Answer the Prompt:
How are _____and_____alike and different in their approach to the topic of Courage to persevere? Which text is more interesting? Why? Use examples from both texts to support your answer.
