  • Bell work: Students read the article on fiction in google classroom and respond to the question in their journals.
  • Introduce Unit 5.
  • Watch "A Cry in the Wild" and fill out Venn Diagram while watching the movie comparing the movie with Hatchet.
  • With their partner the students will discuss what they see that is different and similar so far and how it changed their understanding of the story.
  • Exit ticket: What do you see/hear when reading Hatchet? Was it the same or different when you watched “A Cry in the Wild?” Explain your answer

Period 4:
  • Bellwork: Students read the article on fiction in google classroom and respond to the question in their journals.
  • When do we use R.A.C.E.?
  • Students continue get onto their narrative documents and continue working on their Resolutions.
  • Work time: Students will respond to the prompt on the story.
    • Exit ticket: Self evaluation on their participation while writing.

  • Bell work: Students answer reading question: How does Brian feel about the regarding the .22 gauge rifle and use of the butane lighter? When do we use R.A.C.E.? on google classroom.
  • Students get onto narrative document and continue working on narratives and/or editing their narratives.
  • Review responding to a constructed response, then Read "Up From Slavery"
  • Work time: students will respond the to the prompt about the story.
  • Exit ticket: What is the structure acronym we use to help us respond to a constructed response?

Period 4:
  • Bellwork: Students answer reading question: How does Brian feel regarding the .22 gauge rifle and use of the butane lighter?
  • When do we use R.A.C.E.?
  • Students continue get onto their narrative documents and continue working on their falling action scenes.
  • Review R.A.C.E. then read "Up From Slavery"
  • Work time: Students will respond to the prompt on the story.

  • Resolution and Paulsen style: review Resolution and review Paulsen's style.
  • Work time: students will work on their resolutions or any scene they have not completed yet.
  • Editing: Students switch Chromebooks with their editors and editors give feedback on the falling action and resolution.

  • Read Ch. 16: Annotating for question: Reading like a writer, what are some ways that Paulsen shows Brian's change from old Brian into new Brian in this chapter?
  • Climax: students will write their climax scene making sure that it builds on their rising action and culminates the lesson their character learns from their struggles with nature.
  • Group work: partners will highlight their partner's rising action scenes/lessons and make sure that they are uniform with their climax.
  • Exit ticket:
  • The symbolism for my character’s growth in my climax is _________ and it connects with my rising action/theme because________.
